1865 – Post-Civil War Era

James Madison Zachary, like many young men of the time, seeks ways to build a life. He explores several careers—farming in Toccoa, GA; gold mining in Sapphire; and studying dentistry.

1872 – Land Acquisition

Dr. Zachary purchases a large tract of land in the Norton Community of North Carolina, laying the foundation for what would become GlenCove.

1880 – Construction Begins

Dr. Zachary transforms the land into a self-sustaining farm and homestead.

1880s–1890s – A Thriving Farm & Family Home

Dr. Zachary builds a home for his wife and eight daughters, using materials from a sawmill and kiln he constructed on the property. On the land, 400+ acres were dedicated to grass and grains, and 20 acres were planted with wheat and rye. Additionally, an apple orchard, 105 acres of fish ponds, and space for livestock, including hogs, cattle, and horses, were established.

Late 1800s – From Dentistry to Farming

Dr. Zachary gradually set aside his dental practice, embracing a life rooted in the land. “I used to not love farming, but now I like it best of all… as we have everything we need.”
